Parents

What is PICE?

PICE is an in-depth study of TREE, which is particularly interested in how parents accompany and support their children in their education. PICE was funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation from 2019-2022. The main research questions of PICE are the following:

  • What educational aspirations do parents have for their children?
  • Do the children feel supported by their parents on their educational path?
  • How much support do they actually (still) need?
  • What kind of support do young people feel is particularly helpful on their educational paths - and what kind is not?
  • In which situations do young people want support?
  • How do training wishes change over time?
  • What role do family circumstances play?

Why me?

Your daughter/son participated in TREE and was asked by PICE 2019 for in-depth interviews. In a personal interview, you told us about your family and gave us your views on the topic of education and career aspirations and support. Thank you very much for this!

2019 and 2020 were special years - on the one hand, your daughter/son may have completed an education, started a new one or taken a gap year.  On the other hand, due to the COVID-pandemic, this was a special time that made some things possible and others impossible.  For these reasons, it is important for research and for society to know how parents have experienced these events and to what extent their wishes and support for their children have changed or remained the same.  Therefore, your participation was of great importance for our project!

I don't speak the local language (well).

We have hired multilingual interviewers who are very happy to do the interview with you in your mother tongue. Our interviewers will contact you directly and explain everything to you.

What do I get out of it?

Once again, you will receive a small thank-you gift of 50 Swiss francs for your participation. With this, we would like to thank you for the valuable time you are taking to talk to us. Perhaps you are also interested in sharing your opinion and experience with science and thus to a certain extent with the public.

And data protection?

We take data protection very seriously. We keep your name, contact details and any personal information strictly confidential. We never pass them on and only need them to be able to contact you ourselves. The information you entrust to us is anonymised for scientific evaluation. This means that it will never be possible to trace back who said what. All this also applies to the interview with your child.

Who is funding PICE?

PICE is an in-depth study of TREE, funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation from 2019-2022 and based at the University of Bern. PICE is particularly interested in how parents accompany and support their children throughout their educational pathways.

How long does the PICE project last?

PICE was conducted from 01.08.2019 to 31.12.2022 and is finished now. However, the data collected are available for secondary analysis.

What is it for?

The PICE study wants to find out more about the conditions under which children succeed in school and education. Of particular interest is the role of parents and the support children receive from their parents. The results of the study should help to ensure that as many children as possible successfully complete a good education and receive optimal support from their families.
