Young Adults

What is PICE?

PICE is an in-depth study of TREE,which is particularly interested in how parents accompany and support their children thorughout their educational careers. PICE was funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation from 2019-2022. The main research questions of PICE are the following:

  • What educational aspirations do parents have for their children?
  • Do the children feel supported by their parents on their educational path?
  • How much support do they actually (still) need?
  • What kind of support do young people feel is particularly helpful on their educational paths - and what kind is not?
  • In which situations do young people want support?
  • How do training wishes change over time?
  • What role do family circumstances play?

We would like to thank all those involved who allowed us to interview them!

Why are parents also interviewed (twice)?

Parents often - but not always - play a major role in their children's educational path. Little is known about parents' views on these issues, and that is why it is particularly valuable to listen their stories as well. Confidentiality is very important to us; the conversations are conducted independently and no information about them is passed on, either from you to your parents or vice versa.
In 2020, many of you were about to finish an education or were planning to start something new. Also, due to the pandemic, 2020 was a very special year in which many people had to adjust their plans or put them on hold. We would like to find out how parents experienced this period and to what extent their view on their children's career and educational pathways changed due to the pandemic. Confidentiality is very important to us; no information from last year's interviews will be passed on, neither from you to your parents nor vice versa.

My parents don't speak German/French (well/well). I don't know if they want to participate.

We are happy to interview your parents in their mother tongue if they want to. We have specially trained interviewers for this. We are happy to contact your parents directly to explain everything to them (in German/French or your parents' mother tongue).

What do my parents get out of it?

Your parents will receive a small thank-you gift of 50 Swiss francs again this year.

And data protection?

Data protection is very important to us. Your names and contact details are strictly under lock and key. We never pass them on and only need them to be able to contact you ourselves. The information you entrust to us is anonymised for scientific evaluation. This means that it will never be possible to trace back who said what. All this also applies to the parent interviews.

Who finances PICE?

The PICE study is funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) and is based at the University of Bern.

How long does the PICE project last?

PICE was conducted from 01.08.2019 to 31.12.2022 and is officially closed. However, the data collected is widely analysed.

What is it for?

With the PICE study, we want to find out more about the conditions under which parental support can help children succeed in school and education.  The results will also help us to better support families in their children's education.
